Last year, Brazil saw its biggest drop in emissions since 2009, with emissions falling by 16.7 percent after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stepped up enforcement against deforestation, resulting in the lowest Amazon deforestation level in more than a decade. However, while progress has been made, the country still faces worsening droughts and fires fueled by warming, and if fire prevention efforts do not improve, hard-won gains risk being undone.
