Counting Race: How the Census Measures Identity and What Americans Think About It

Since 1790, the U.S. census has measured race in ways that have changed alongside politics and attitudes, with responses now shaping policies from congressional districts to resource distribution. Nearly half of Americans support the government asking about race, but a third oppose it, and upcoming 2030 census changes, such as combining race and Hispanic origin into one question and adding a Middle Eastern or North African category—are largely unknown to the public.
