Spanish Conservatives Take Late, Limited Responsibility for Deadly Valencia Floods

Carlos Mazón, the center-right president of Spain’s Valencia region, announced his resignation, caving to pressure to take political responsibility for the devastating floods in which 229 people died one year ago.  Spanish courts exonerated national figures and established that the regional government was the only entity authorized to manage the crisis, with Mazón ultimately admitting he had made mistakes but choosing not to dissolve parliament or resign as a lawmaker.
