The United States has a lower life expectancy than other wealthy nations, in part because its car-centric built environment excludes those unable to drive, especially older adults, as Americans who reach their eighties typically outlive their ability to drive safely by seven to ten years. Proven, cost-effective safety interventions and policies that support local competition to attract and retain retirees—such as improving walkability and transit—can both maximize life-years saved and enhance seniors’ quality of life.
