Xcel Energy seeks to double planned battery capacity at its Sherco site, add a 200-megawatt fourth phase of solar, and deploy 136 MW of batteries at Blue Lake, responding to rising electricity demand and the pending early phaseout of federal clean-energy tax credits. If approved, Sherco would host 910 MW of solar and 600 MW of battery capacity by decade’s end, helping offset the output from the soon-to-retire 2,300-MW Sherco coal plant, as Minnesota targets 100% clean power by 2040.
