Sydney Australia has opened five new stations on it’s driverless metro line after starting construction back in 2017. Transit enthusiasts woke up early to get the first train and some folks have been blown away by some of the designs. The train will come every 4 minutes at rush hour and can carry up to 40,000 passengers per hour.
Further North West, India is celebrating the completion of 700km of metro lines in 21 cities built over the last 10 years. Currently, 6km of metro are completed a month and the country has constructed four different manufacturing facilities to build trains for the systems.
Would love to see some kind of program like this here to build metro expansions around the United States where they are needed. We often hear about cities where it’s easy to get around on bike or foot, but the fact is many of them are supported by an excellent transit system that facilitates all that walking and biking. And I honestly don’t believe that an autonomous vehicle revolution would do the same thing. In fact, all those cars driving around are likely to make things worse.
