Venice-based artist Nicola Di Croce engaged over 200 Montrealers in participatory workshops to reimagine the sonic environment of Place de La Paix, finding residents wanted to ‘mask’ traffic noise and amplify natural and community sounds, ultimately creating an installation that mixes real local sounds to foster a more tranquil and welcoming public space. Di Croce argues that including sound in tactical urbanism allows communities to shape their own auditory environments, challenging traditional noise policies and emphasizing local engagement over top-down regulation.
