Polls show 80 to 89 percent of people globally want stronger climate action, but most believe they’re in the minority, a perception gap worsened by inconsistent and decontextualized media coverage as well as by the media’s legitimization of climate denial and the widespread blending of advertorial content from fossil fuel companies into news. US and UK media are global outliers in amplifying industry talking points, and experts say closing this gap requires rapid, transparent attribution of disinformation and more proactive reporting as the media is a powerful driver of public opinion and political will on climate.
