Downtown subsidizes city services, schools and hospitals for the entire city — and county — through its property taxes, with 0.2% of the city’s land producing roughly 25 times the citywide average and $66 million per year to city services, roughly 5% of the city’s total annual property tax revenue of $1.42 billion in 2024. A healthy downtown would be worth $80 billion and generate $1.78 billion in total property tax revenue and $560 million directly to the city, an increase by about eight times; more downtown high-rises, fewer parking lots, fewer mansions and more high-rises would mean less property tax burden on you.
